Treasure trunk.....a free find to hold family momentos at least for a while...

Who would have guessed I would find my Treasure Trunk in a trash pile at the end of a driveway? Well, I did. Keep your eyes open...you never know what you might find until you find it.

We were visiting our daughter in her hometown, on our merry way to Church and I was the first to spot it. Everyone in the car agreed that it did look interesting and on the way back from Church it was still there and we loaded it up in our daughter's van. It's typical for people to pick up items left for the trash haulers. I don't go looking at every one's trash...however, if I spot something that looks interesting or useful, I wouldn't hesitate. I've picked up more that one used vacuum sweeper and shared with someone w/o cost who needed one. Problem, thrown out vacuum sweepers normally only need minor things like a new belt or bag...I have learned this tip from my daughter. I really haven't seen anything quite like it before and 'Oh my!' did it ever need repaired. For a long time was filled with framed art and family photos when we renovated our addition. I knew I better get going on this project. What I love about the Treasure Trunk is all the detail of the foiled strips. It can store items such as photos...I have a zillion from all the past years and I can't bear to part with any of them. These days, I'm keeping everything electronically. I will do a post someday...scrap booking the photos waiting for me I promise. They say 'a picture is worth a thousand words sometimes'. I agree. Especially, reliving the beautiful memories of a person you love who has passed on into another life. I am a BIG believer in keeping memories alive! I hang on tight, I've lost people I love with all my heart.

To begin this project, I had to do some research because it's all new to me. The foil embossed strips needed straightened and reapplied to the surface.

My idea for my Treasure Trunk, to hold old family photographs and little keepsakes such as our baby box memories (our three children's Baptism outfits, crocheted blankets and first toys). I must add my husbands childhood toy horse and the Chatty Cathy doll I bought many years ago at a flea Market (a replica of the one I loved as a child). She doesn't chat any more, but she sure brings back memories of being a little girl.

Our baby box, is simply a box right which is now set inside an very sturdy old wicker basket trunk that one of our puppies chewed the corner on many 27 years ago. It was so upsetting back then and now, I miss those simple days when the children were little. We were in the middle of renovating our farm house, living in a 2 bedroom duplex. Our wonderful dog Brunheld, gave birth to 11 adorable puppies. When they started running around we had to keep them in the basement in the duplex, our storage area was filled on one side and the puppies were teething. Those were the good days and I miss them so much!!!

Do you have a treasure trunk? A treasure box or basket? A wooden cedar chest? I would love to hear all about it. Maybe it's a simple box for now or maybe you have your treasures in a bag? Did you know there are some amazing ways to decorate boxes? I will try to share ideas on 'Treasure Boxes' if anyone is interested. Just let me know. Please share about the one you would like to create. I welcome comments and I will enjoy learning about your recycling projects.

(Update- the Treasure trunk eventually fell apart however not the treasures.)
